TheemergenceofindustrializationandurbanizationhappenedinShanghaiintheearly20thcentury,triggeringcitizens’dualneedsforpracticalandaestheticallypleasingarchitecture.TheerawasalsoahistoricalturningpointforChina’s“first-generationarchitects”(roughly20prominenttrailblazersincludingZhuBin,FanWenzhaoandLiangSicheng)whostudiedattheUniversityofPennsylvaniaandthenreturnedtoChinatobecomethebackboneofmodernarchitecturaldesignandurbanconstructioninthecountry.
