At7:00p.m.onMay14,2016,“AnimamixBiennale2015-2016–SpaceinMind”wasofficiallylaunchedatMuseumofContemporaryArt(MOCA),Shanghai,withparticipationfromartisticinstitutionsfromhomeandabroadincludingHongKongVisualArtsCentre,CityUniversityofHongKong,YinchuanModernArtMuseum,SouthKorea’sDaeguArtMuseum,andArt:1NewMuseuminJakarta,Indonesia.Thirteeninvitedartistsfromaroundtheglobedeployeddiversecreativemediumsandtechnologiessuchasanimation,painting,sculpture,andnewmediatoreconstructspace,time,narration,andworldviews.

RespondingtoJeffreyShaw’sideathat,“…everyauthenticpoeticprojectisdirectedtowardsknowledge,”theexhibitionbeganwithanexplorationintoexhibitscapableofguidingthinkingaboutnewknowledge,whichinspiredMOCAtoproposethetheme,“SpaceinMind.”“Everyartisthascreatedhisorherownspace,whichleadstoauniqueworldofmind,”illustratesCuratorWangWeiwei.
It’salsoworthmentioningthattheeventmarkedthefirstshowinginChinaforeveryparticipatingforeignartist,andthemajorityofworkswerecraftedespeciallyforthespaceinMOCA–arigidchallengeforbothartistsandexhibitors.
Alongwithexhibitsofcontemporaryartists,MOCAalsoofferedGalaPresentationsofoutstandinganimatedshortsbyartistsfromChina,France,Poland,Germany,andJapan.Ithasprovidedspaceforanimamixstudioprojectsforvisitorsfromeveryagegroup,includingchildren,tolearndirectlyaboutandexperiencetheentireanimationprocess.
